Quick Answer
HPM iControl is discontinued, but it is not always unfixable. Cync Electrical repairs, services and reprograms iControl systems across Greater Sydney — we hold remaining parts stock and run the original iBAS programming software, which almost no other contractor can offer. Where a system is too far gone to be worth repairing we will say so, and quote the C-Bus upgrade instead.

The usual line is that iControl can't be fixed because nothing is made any more. The first half is true. The conclusion isn't — at least not yet.

Nothing has been manufactured for years, but remaining stock still exists in Australia and we hold parts. Where a module can be sourced, we replace it and your system keeps running.
Where a part genuinely can't be found, we'll tell you on the phone rather than dragging out a diagnosis you're paying for.
But supply is finite
The honest caveat
This won't last forever, and it's the real reason to plan ahead rather than wait for the next module to drop. A repair today buys you time to upgrade on your terms instead of in an emergency.
What it also means: nobody should be quoting you a full system replacement on the basis that "no parts exist." That isn't accurate today.
iBAS reprogramming
iControl was configured through iBAS — Intelligent Building Automation Software — over a serial link to the H2A control panel. Legrand stopped distributing it years ago, and it needs period-correct hardware to run. We have both.
Depending on your system, that means we can change how it behaves rather than just keeping it alive:
- Reassign keypad buttons — change what any button does
- Create and edit scenes and moods
- Adjust dimmer minimum and maximum levels
- Change ramp rates and dimming curves
- Reconfigure occupancy sensor sensitivity and timeouts
- Adjust light-level thresholds
- Reprogram security zones, areas and PIN codes
- Reprogram RF keyring remotes and receivers
Back up your system while you still can
This matters more than most owners realise. If your configuration has never been backed up, a single controller failure takes twenty years of programming with it. Unlike C-Bus — where we can often recover a lost project file straight off the network — iControl leaves you far less to work with.
If we're on site for anything else, it's worth doing while we're there.
What reprogramming can't do
Software access and a dead dimmer channel are two different problems. iBAS can change how your system behaves; it can't repair failed hardware. We'll be clear about which one you've got before we quote anything.
LED downlights and iControl dimmers
This is the single most common reason a working iControl system suddenly starts misbehaving.
The halogens get swapped for LEDs. The lights go in fine. Then the trouble starts: flicker at low levels, lights that won't dim below about a third, lamps glowing faintly when they should be off, a buzz from the switchboard, one room behaving completely differently from the next on what look like identical fittings.
The system hasn't failed. It's doing exactly what it was designed to do, with loads it was never designed for.
Why it happens
iControl's dimmers are leading-edge units built for halogen and dichroic lamps, and each channel needs a minimum load to switch cleanly — the common H2F2 module specifies 40W minimum per channel. Six 50W halogens drew around 300 watts. Six LED replacements might draw 45.
On paper you're above the threshold. Electrically you often aren't, because LED drivers behave nothing like the wire-wound and electronic transformers these dimmers were designed and tested against.
We see the same problem on C-Bus, where dimmers were built around the same 50W halogen assumptions — it's covered in our C-Bus fault finding guide. The difference is that C-Bus has a current replacement module for it. On iControl, the fix usually has to come from the lamp selection, the load, or the programming.
It isn't universal
Some iControl dimmer modules handle LEDs far better than others — the later adaptive leading and trailing-edge commercial units are markedly more tolerant of LED drivers than the standard two-channel H2F2. Systems running DALI fluorescent dimming aren't affected at all, because DALI is digital signalling rather than phase cutting. Which category you're in depends on what's actually in your switchboard.
And a cause that isn't your system at all
If you're on the Northern Beaches and your lights flicker, the culprit is frequently mains signal interference from the network operator — not your dimmers, not your lamps. It gets misdiagnosed as failed hardware constantly, and people replace perfectly good modules over it. We've written it up in detail on our Northern Beaches guide.
Planning an LED upgrade?
Let us test one circuit with your chosen lamp first. It's a small job, and it tells you exactly what the whole house will do — considerably cheaper than finding out after you've bought forty downlights.
Already done it and it's misbehaving? We'll work out whether the answer is a different lamp, a load correction, a different dimmer module, or a programming change to the dimming curve. It's usually solvable without touching the rest of the system.
Either way — don't accept "the system is broken" as a diagnosis just because new lights flicker. That's a compatibility problem, and compatibility problems have answers.
What usually fails
iControl systems rarely die all at once. The failure pattern is predictable — and most of it is serviceable.
Power supply batteries
The sealed lead-acid backups in the H2B and H2B2 supplies were rated for a few years, not two decades. A flashing "Battery Good" LED means replacement is due — and on security-enabled systems, missing batteries can stop the alarm arming at all.
Dimmer modules
The H2F2 two-channel dimmers run hot in a crowded switchboard and were derated significantly when mounted side by side — a rack of four with no ventilation is rated well below a single unit. Dead channels and lamps not reaching full brightness are the usual symptoms.
Control panel battery
The H2A panel holds a CR2032 with a stated two-year life — long flat in most systems. The panel keeps running but loses its clock and settings after every power interruption.
Bus connections
Keypads and sensors themselves are generally robust. Faults are usually corroded IDC crimps on the figure-8 bus, low bus voltage from a tired power supply, or water ingress at outdoor sensors.
RF remotes
H2J keyring transmitters run on lithium coin cells and simply go flat. A flashing red LED on the receiver almost always means batteries — not a system fault, and not a reason to replace anything.
Touch screens
The least reliable component in the range and the hardest to do anything about. Same story as failed C-Bus touch screens — replacing like-for-like just restarts the clock, when parts exist at all.

We hold a working setup, so keypad functions, scenes, dimmer levels, sensor settings and security zones can still be changed on a functioning system.

LED drivers also behave very differently to the transformers these dimmers were tested against, so a circuit can sit above the stated threshold on paper and still misbehave in practice.
It depends how much has failed. If the system works and the fault is a battery, a keypad, a bus connection or programming, repair is usually the sensible option. If several modules have failed, if the parts you need can't be sourced, or if you want capability the platform never had — phone and voice control, reliable LED dimming, new zones — then upgrading to C-Bus is the better use of your money.
Usually a bus fault rather than the keypad itself. The most common causes are corroded or failed IDC crimp connections on the figure-8 bus cable, low bus voltage from a degrading power supply, or physical damage to a cable run. We measure the bus rather than guess, and in most cases the keypad turns out to be fine.
iBAS — Intelligent Building Automation Software — was the programming platform for iControl. It connected to the H2A control panel over a serial link and ran on Windows XP-era hardware. Legrand no longer distributes it. It can still be used where a working copy and compatible hardware exist, but it only changes programming — it can't repair failed hardware.
Oscar was a closely related Australian platform using the same DIN-rail and low-voltage bus approach, and it was discontinued the same way. Tell us what you've got and we'll let you know honestly whether we can help or whether an upgrade is the better path.
