C-Bus Repairs in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs.
Fault finding, reprogramming, dimmer and power supply diagnosis from Bondi to Vaucluse. Licensed electricians and C-Bus specialists — we diagnose the software and replace the hardware. From $295.
Quick Answer
Been told your C-Bus system needs a new power supply? It's sometimes the right answer — but on a system that's been running fine for five years or more, it's worth a second look. A system that worked correctly for years hasn't suddenly outgrown its power budget. Far more often, one of the original power supplies has started underperforming, and the symptoms look identical to being short on power. Fitting an additional supply can mask that for a while without addressing what actually failed.
The distinction matters because it changes what you're paying for and whether the fault comes back. We diagnose which it is on-site using the C-Bus Network Analyser rather than working from symptoms alone. Residential visits start at $295 across the Eastern Suburbs, and we're licensed electricians as well as C-Bus specialists — so if hardware does need replacing, we can legally do it in the same visit.
The Two Things C-Bus Systems Get Wrongly Blamed For
Most of the Eastern Suburbs C-Bus work we're called to has already been looked at by someone else. Usually the homeowner has a quote in hand and a nagging feeling that the number doesn't match the problem. Two diagnoses come up again and again, and both deserve a second look before you approve anything.
1. "You need another power supply"
C-Bus units draw their power from the network itself, and every system is designed with enough supply capacity for the units connected to it. So when a system starts behaving strangely — keypads dropping out, zones unresponsive, indicators dim — running short on power is a genuine possibility, and adding a supply is sometimes exactly right.
But here's the part that gets skipped. If your system has run correctly for five years or more, it hasn't suddenly developed a power shortage. Nothing was added. The load didn't change. What's far more likely is that one of the original power supplies has started to degrade and is no longer delivering what it used to — and a failing supply produces symptoms almost identical to an under-powered network.
The difference matters. Fit an additional supply alongside a failing one and the system may well settle down for a while, because you've added headroom. But you haven't replaced what actually failed, and you've paid for hardware you may not have needed. We measure bus voltage across the network with the C-Bus Network Analyser and identify whether the existing supplies are performing to spec before recommending anything.
2. "The whole system needs replacing"
The other one we hear regularly. C-Bus is a robust platform and the installed hardware in most Eastern Suburbs homes is fine — what fails is usually a single module, a single fitting, or the programming. A fault in one dimmer channel is not a reason to replace a system. Neither is a failed touch screen, or a scene that stopped working, or a room that's gone unresponsive.
There are legitimate reasons to move on from an ageing system, and we'll tell you honestly when we think you've reached one. But "it's easier for us to replace it than diagnose it" isn't one of them.
How we approach it instead
Measure, don't assume
Bus voltage measured at multiple points across the network with the C-Bus Network Analyser, plus traffic analysis. That tells us whether supply is genuinely short, whether a supply is underperforming, or whether the fault is somewhere else entirely.
Check the programming before the hardware
A surprising share of "hardware faults" are programming faults — sometimes errors present since the original commissioning that only surface when someone finally uses that part of the system. Software problems are cheaper to fix and worth ruling out first.
Give you the options, not the invoice
Where hardware genuinely has failed, we lay out what's available — like-for-like replacement, a better alternative, or in some cases a different approach entirely. You choose. See the Bellevue Hill touch screen job below for how that plays out.
Holding a quote you're unsure about?
Bring it to us. We'll diagnose the system independently and tell you what we find — including when the original quote was right. A second opinion costs $295. A replacement you didn't need costs considerably more.
Book a Second OpinionC-Bus Faults We Fix Across the Eastern Suburbs
Eastern Suburbs homes tend to run larger, more integrated C-Bus systems — lighting alongside underfloor heating, pool equipment, blinds and climate. More integration means more places for a fault to hide. Not sure what you're dealing with? Try our free C-Bus fault finder.
Failed Dimmer & Relay Channels
An individual channel failing inside a multi-channel dimmer is one of the most common C-Bus hardware faults — and one of the most commonly misdiagnosed. We identify the specific failed channel rather than condemning the whole unit or the system.
Book a diagnosis →Heated Floors & Pool Equipment Misbehaving
C-Bus in these homes often controls more than lighting. Underfloor heating switching on at odd hours, or pool equipment running when it shouldn't, is usually a programming fault in the automation controller — not a fault in the heating or pool system itself.
See the Bronte job →Dead or Failing Touch Screens
C-Bus touch screens are among the least reliable components in the ecosystem, and replacing one like-for-like often just restarts the clock on the same problem. There are better options now — worth discussing before you spend the money.
See the Bellevue Hill job →Dead Keypads or Unresponsive Zones
No mains power at the unit, low bus voltage from a degrading power supply, a failed output channel, or a network communication fault across multiple zones. We confirm which on-site rather than replacing parts and hoping.
Book a diagnosis →Original Commissioning Errors
Programming mistakes made at initial setup can sit dormant for years until someone actually uses that part of the system. Suddenly a feature that "never worked properly" has an explanation — and a fix that doesn't involve new hardware.
Book a diagnosis →Flickering LED Downlights
Usually a load or dimmer compatibility issue after a halogen-to-LED upgrade — C-Bus dimmers were designed for 50W halogen loads and LEDs sit far below their minimum threshold. Fixable at circuit level without touching the rest of the system.

Eastern Suburbs C-Bus Systems Are Bigger — and More Integrated
What we see across Bondi, Bellevue Hill, Vaucluse, Rose Bay and Woollahra differs from the rest of Sydney in some specific ways.
Larger, More Integrated Systems
C-Bus in the East frequently controls underfloor heating, pool equipment, blinds, gates and climate alongside lighting. More integration means a fault in one place can present somewhere unexpected — and means the diagnosis needs to consider the whole system.
Commissioning Errors That Never Surfaced
Big systems get commissioned under time pressure, and parts of them may not be used for years. We regularly find programming that was never correct — not something that broke, something that was never finished properly.
Coastal Corrosion
Bondi, Bronte, Tamarama, Coogee and the harbourside suburbs get the same salt air exposure as any beachfront property. Intermittent faults that come and go are often corroded connections rather than failed components.
Properties That Have Changed Hands
Many of these homes have been sold once or twice since the system went in, and the original project file left with the original owner. We recover it directly from the network with C-Bus ToolKit so reprogramming doesn't start from zero.
Strata & Apartment Systems
Plenty of C-Bus across Eastern Suburbs apartment buildings — common area lighting, carparks, foyers and lifts. We work with strata and building managers on both reactive repairs and scheduled maintenance.
Licensed electrician and C-Bus specialist
Not every C-Bus specialist is a licensed electrician. Some can diagnose programming but can't legally touch the hardware — which means a second trade, a second visit, and a second invoice. We hold NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 487170C. One visit, both halves of the job.
How an Eastern Suburbs Callout Works
Diagnosis first, options second, work third. No pressure to replace anything that doesn't need replacing.
1. Book a Technician
Use the form below or call us. Tell us your suburb and what's happening — and mention if you're holding a quote from someone else. Residential from $295. Strata and commercial quoted on scope.
2. Measured Diagnosis
Bus voltage measured across the network, traffic analysed, programming checked. We work out what's actually wrong rather than replacing likely suspects. Most faults are identified within the first hour.
3. Options, Then Repair
We explain what we found and what your choices are — including when the cheapest option is the right one. Then we fix it, test every affected zone, and leave you with a backup of your project file.

Eastern Suburbs C-Bus Questions
What clients in the East ask us most. Call 0422 253 379 if yours isn't here.
It's sometimes correct, but it's worth checking. C-Bus units draw power from the network, and an under-powered network genuinely does cause dropouts and unresponsive zones. However, if your system has been running correctly for five years or more, it hasn't suddenly developed a power shortage — nothing was added and the load didn't change. In our experience the more likely explanation is that one of the original power supplies has degraded and is no longer delivering to spec, which produces very similar symptoms. Adding a supply alongside a failing one may settle things temporarily without addressing what actually failed. We measure bus voltage across the network with the C-Bus Network Analyser to establish which situation you're in before recommending hardware.
Often, yes — a good portion of our Eastern Suburbs work is exactly this. Two things commonly go wrong on the first attempt. Either the diagnosis was made from symptoms rather than measurement, or whoever attended wasn't able to complete the job. We attended a Vaucluse home where the owner had been told they needed a new power supply by a company that wasn't licensed to do electrical work — the actual fault was a failed 8-channel dimmer, and we resolved it in a day. Bring us whatever you've been told and we'll assess it independently.
Very likely, if your C-Bus system controls the heating — which is common in Eastern Suburbs homes. Underfloor heating, pool equipment, blinds and gates are frequently run through the same automation controller as the lighting, so a programming fault there presents as the heating misbehaving even though nothing is wrong with the heating itself. We fixed exactly this in a Bronte home: the automation controller had programming that was never set up correctly during the original commissioning, and it only became obvious once the owners started using that part of the system properly. It was a software fix — no hardware replaced.
You can, but it's worth considering the alternative first. Touch screens are among the less reliable components in the C-Bus ecosystem — they tend to fail earlier than the modules around them, so a like-for-like replacement often means having the same conversation again in a few years. The alternative is bridging your existing C-Bus system into Apple Home and using iPhones, iPads or a wall-mounted tablet as the interface. Every switch, dimmer and circuit stays exactly as-is. We did this for a Bellevue Hill client whose long-running fault turned out to be a failed touch screen — he chose the Apple Home route over another panel and was very happy with it. We'll give you both options and the costs.
Usually not. C-Bus is a robust platform and most of the installed hardware in Eastern Suburbs homes is fine. What fails is typically a single module, a single fitting, or the programming — none of which requires replacing a system. A fault in one dimmer channel, a failed touch screen, a scene that stopped working, or an unresponsive room are all repairable at component level. There are legitimate reasons to move on from a very old system, and we'll tell you honestly if we think you've reached one. But we won't recommend replacement because it's simpler than diagnosing.
Both. We hold NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 487170C and we specialise in C-Bus. That combination matters more than it sounds. A programmer-only specialist can diagnose a software fault but can't legally replace a dimmer, relay or power supply — so you need a second trade, a second visit and a second invoice. A general electrician can do the hardware but usually can't diagnose at network level or reprogram the system. We do both halves in one visit.
Residential C-Bus diagnostic and repair visits start from $295 across the Eastern Suburbs, covering arrival, on-site diagnosis and minor adjustments. Many programming faults are resolved within that first visit. Hardware replacement incurs parts costs on top, quoted before any work proceeds. Strata and commercial jobs are quoted on scope before we attend. If you're seeking a second opinion on an existing quote, that's the same $295 — and considerably cheaper than a replacement you didn't need.
Yes, and it's common in the East where many properties have changed hands since the system was installed. In most cases we recover the project file directly from the network by scanning it with C-Bus ToolKit, which gives a complete map of every unit, group address, scene and schedule. We work from that recovered file. Where full recovery isn't possible we rebuild from a site walkthrough. Either way we leave you with a backup copy so you're not in this position again.
